Sunya W. Folayan, MSW, ACSW, brings therapeutic arts, textiles and West African percussion/dance as skills in her repertoire as a seasoned professional in the healing arts. A creative activist, Sunya uses innovative methods to open new pathways to change and learning capitalizing on the skills she learned as a practicing clinical social worker and licensed marriage and family therapist for many years. She has worked as a national and international trainer and consultant on the issues of domestic violence, class, gender race and culture for over 15 years. She has presented academic papers at professional conventions including the American Psychological Association, the National Council for African American Men, and the North Carolina chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
In recent years she has been combining her therapeutic and educational background with her love of art and music and movement. . She has worked in the capacity of a therapeutic teaching artist in residencies in school systems throughout the southern United States, and has conducted psycho-educational workshops for adults and children in a variety of settings throughout the United States and in the Caribbean.
Sunya received her Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, her birthplace. She received her Master's degree in Social Work from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has served as coordinator of the social work department at Livingstone College, and was a guest faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
For several years she served on the faculty of the North Carolina School of Drug and Alcohol Studies, and the Family Therapy Training Institute in Charlotte. She has enjoyed a long and interesting career in numerous clinical settings from corporate to private practice.
